Stop Playing It Cool.
The Obsession
Edition - 022
Welcome to The Obsession, glad you're here.
Something that's been on my mind lately is the current trend of acting like you don't care. Being nonchalant. Playing it cool. Not showing too much interest in anything.
And I don't get it.
Why would you not care? About the things you do, the people around you, the goals you're working toward?
I don't want to be mediocre. I want to be exceptional. And I don't think you get there by pretending things don't matter to you.
Look at the people who have reached the top of their field.
Michael Jordan didn't act like he didn't care. Watch The Last Dance and you'll see a man who cared about winning in everything: basketball, golf, poker, business. That fire wasn't something he turned off when the cameras stopped rolling. It was who he was.
Steve Jobs didn’t just casually start the largest tech company in the world. He wanted to change the world, and every decision was that of his obsession with what he knew he could do.
Think about anyone you admire who has accomplished something meaningful. They didn't get there by being indifferent. They got there by doing everything in their power to bend their situation to their will.
For me, I care just as much about my marriage, my work, my faith, my friends, golf, working out, helping others, and this blog as if it was a professional sport. That drive hasn't gone away. It's just spread into more areas of my life.
And I'd imagine your hero or the person who inspires you most would say the same thing.
So here's what I'll leave you with: if you are passionate about something, be passionate about it. Share it with others. Show that you care. Live life with some passion and some drive. The world has enough people pretending like nothing matters to them.
What are you passionate about?
THE WEEKLY 3
1) One Question I Asked Myself
Where am I holding back because I'm worried about looking like I care too much?
2) One Idea That Shifted Me
The people I admire most aren't the ones who play it cool. They're the ones who go all in and don't apologize for it.
3) One Challenge to Take Into Your Week
Pick one thing you care about and show it this week. Talk about it, put energy into it, let people see that it matters to you. That's not weakness. That's what separates you.
