What your time is worth.

The Obsession | Edition - 045

No amount of money ever bought a second of time.

We are all probably addicted to social media in some form or fashion. And we are all probably aware that doom scrolling is not a healthy thing.

But something that has resonated with me more than what’s healthy or not healthy is how I’m using my time.

If you are in your 20s, I think you should take your screen time seriously. Why? Your 20s are an extremely defining period in your life. Meg Jay makes the argument in The Defining Decade that your 20s are the most influential years in determining how successful you’ll be later on in life.

By that logic alone, if you spend hours a day on social media you are eating away some of the most important time you have.

Now I want to be clear. There is a time and a place for everything. I am not saying go get a flip phone. I spend too much time on social media too. I’m trying to change that.

The way I look at it is that during peak hours where other activities could take place, sitting around scrolling just can’t be an option. Those are hours I could spend working, being with other people, doing something I love, learning something new.

There is no real benefit to scrolling. You most likely can’t even tell me what a video you watched one minute ago was about.

So that begs the question. What is worth your time? I’d say whatever makes you more interesting.

Reading a book. A new coffee shop. A conversation with a friend. A new experience. Interesting things can be found in the simplest parts of life. I have never once been asked, “Any new reels you’ve seen recently?”

To help with this I use an app called Opal (not a plug). It’s an app blocker with no workaround that auto kicks on during the day from 9 to 5 and each evening at 11 PM. There are plenty of options out there as they become more and more popular. Find one that works for you and commit to it.

Is your phone wasting your time?
