What It Smells Like in the Sistine Chapel.
The Obsession | Edition - 041
"If I asked you about art you'd probably give me the skinny on every art book ever written. Michelangelo, you know a lot about him. Life's work, political aspirations, him and the pope, sexual orientation, the whole works, right? I bet you can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel. You've never actually stood there and looked up at that beautiful ceiling." - Good Will Hunting
I think this scene is one of the most relatable and powerful moments in the film, and very applicable in today's world.
It almost feels like you can experience anything now because most everything is filmed and posted for people to see. But I think sometimes you can fall into the trap of becoming the expert of something you've never actually done.
Just like in Good Will Hunting. Will thinks he knows everything. But as Sean points out, he's never experienced any of it because he's never left his hometown.
Knowing about something and living it are two very different things.
I don't want travel vlogs taking away from me actually traveling.
Podcasts replacing thoughts of my own.
AI taking away from the learning process.
Researching something so much and I never actually try it.
I'm not saying don't look at media. I'm saying be aware of what your inputs are and how they're affecting you.
There's a difference between consuming something and letting it inspire you to act. Hopefully, and I would think most people who make content like I do feel the same way, you are inspired to go, to change, to try something new after watching or reading or listening.
Not just to move on to the next piece of content without thinking about what you could do.
Don't just know about it. Go experience it.
THE WEEKLY 3
1) One Question I Asked Myself
Am I learning about things or actually experiencing them?
2) One Idea That Shifted Me
There's a difference between consuming something and letting it inspire you to act. One makes you feel like you've done something. The other actually changes you.
3) One Challenge to Take Into Your Week
Think of one thing you've watched, listened to, or read about that made you want to try something. Go do it this week. Not the research. Not the planning. The thing itself.
