Habits Don't Transfer, The Work Does.

The Obsession | Edition - 034

Maybe you're like me and already thinking about next year. It can be almost daunting how fast a year flies by as an adult.

Something that's been on my mind recently is how people build the habits that lead them to be successful. And I think it all comes down to one thing.

There are no shortcuts. The only thing you can do is the work.

A habit in one area does not mean success in another:

Here's a basic example. You read somewhere that 80% of millionaires work out three or more times a week. So you start working out.

That's a great habit and something I'm a huge supporter of. But working out is not what made them successful. It's probably more along the lines of they value their health, so they put in the work to keep it.

The habit is a reflection of the discipline, not the cause of the success.

Habits don't easily transfer:

The process of learning to love working out even when you don't want to is a great skill to have. But you have to be able to take it a step further and find the will to make 100 cold calls when you don't feel like it too.

It takes reps and time to be successful at anything. And your wins in one area don't mean you're going to have immediate success in another. You can build foundations, but to actually grow at something new you're going to have to start from the beginning. Just like you once did in the gym.

There are no shortcuts. Just the work. And the work is what transfers.

Is there something you're working towards where you need to go back to the fundamentals?

The Weekly 3

1)One Question I Asked Myself

Where am I assuming that success in one area of my life means I can skip the reps in another?

2) One Idea That Shifted Me

The habit isn't what makes you successful. It's a reflection of the discipline behind it. And that discipline has to be rebuilt every time you start something new.

3) One Challenge to Take Into Your Week

Pick one area where you've been coasting on momentum from somewhere else. Treat it like day one. Put in the reps this week like you're starting from scratch, because you are.
